The Professional Scrum Master (PSM I) course is a dynamic and interactive 16 hour workshop that delves into the heart of Scrum and Agile practices. This course is meticulously structured around the Scrum Guide, updated in November 2020, ensuring participants grasp the latest advancements in Scrum. Through a blend of discussion, hands-on exercises, and real-life case studies, attendees will learn the roles, events, and artifacts of Scrum, as well as the importance of Scrum values and principles for successful implementation.

Steps:

1. Attend a PSM I Course: Participate in a 16 hour course taught by a Professional Scrum Trainer (PST).
2. Study and Prepare: Review the Scrum Guide and course materials; take advantage of online assessment simulations
3. Take the Exam: Successfully pass the PSM I assessment with a score of 85% or higher.
4. Achieve Certification: Upon passing, you’ll receive the PSM-I certification. The certification has life-time validity. It does not expire.

• Scrum Theory and Principles: Foundations of Scrum, its theory, principles, and values based on empirical process control.
• The Scrum Framework: In-depth exploration of sprints, sprint planning, daily scrum, sprint review, and sprint retrospective
• The Definition of Done: Understanding and applying the Definition of Done.
• Running a Scrum Project: Roles and responsibilities, managing product backlogs, and delivering value incrementally.
• Working with People and Teams: Building and fostering team dynamics, facilitating Scrum practices, and managing stakeholders.

There are no specific pre-requisites but delegates meeting below criteria can go for the certification:

A Scrum Master is a team Coach. When we try to build complex products we need collective wisdom. Whenever any level of Cognitive thinking is involved, the command and control style of management stops working. To foster creative thinking and discover new resourcefulness, we need to enable team’s to self-organize and be self-aware. Self-organization is not natural and doesn’t happen overnight, and it takes years of persistence effort to build a system that supports self-organization. Empirical frameworks like Scrum are very useful in developing such teams. Scrum Master is a Systems Coach, who are experts in systems thinking, organizational change, and implementation. Their focus is the energy, wisdom of the individual of the team and their interrelatedness.

In order to play such a role with a huge responsibility for organizational design, one needs to be good at Systems Thinking, Facilitation, Process Design, and Coaching. So anybody who has these skills can work towards becoming a Scrum Master irrespective of your current role. Few examples of such enabler functions in other models are Six Sigma Black Belts, Executive Coaches, Team Coaches, Project Management Office, etc.
